Carlotta Champagne – Touch Down

It was Carlotta Champagne who reminded me a few weeks ago that I was injured when I did the photoshoot that resulted in this beautiful photo with her.

“You threw your back out in the cave. Remember?”

Oh yeah. I forgot about that. It wasn’t long after making this photo of her lovely curved torso, that the pain got so bad that I could barely walk.

Photo Daily: Carlotta in the Garden

Being a photographer who mainly photographs in my studio or a more urban setting, it did take me a while to get used to shooting in nature in Todos Santos, Mexico. So much nature! So when my lovely model friend, Carlotta and I decided to photograph her in and around the grounds of the …

Photo Daily: Mia DeRosa Midnight Step

Mia DeRosa is a lovely model who came to me last year through another model friend of mine, Carlotta Champagne. Mia was relatively new to modeling when I photographed her, yet I found her wonderfully easy to collaborate with. One evening during her visit, we had dinner at one of my favorite sushi restaurants …

Photo Daily: Carlotta Reaching in the Dark

It’s fun to play with time when creating photography. This photograph of Carlotta Champagne I made is full of time playfulness. She and I were both looking to create something a little out of the ordinary. I first saw Fritz Lang’s 1927 film, Metropolis, in my pre-teen years. It was a profound visual experience that greatly …

Photo Daily: The Eyes of Carlotta

My model friend Carlotta Champagne is enormous amounts of fun. When I first photographed her in Mexico a few years ago, I was in a serious mood for some reason when we began to shoot. It wasn’t until I lightened the fuck up and caught up with her happy mood that the photographs began …

Photo Daily: Carlotta Water Surface

Water. I love to be near it. In life and in my photography. It’s always a special treat when I get to combine the two. I was photographing my friend Carlotta Champagne in Todos Santos, Mexico a few years ago. It was a hot day. The kind of day when you try to avoid the …

Photo Daily: Die Antwoord Concert Audience

I had the pleasure of attending the June 3rd Chicago Die Antwoord concert with my good model friend Carlotta Champagne. It was her birthday, and she happened to be staying at my studio for a week. We made some great art (short film coming soon), and then headed out to the beautiful old Riviera Theatre …

Photo Daily: Carlotta’s Dark Circus, Part 1

Sometimes an idea comes out of nowhere. Or out of a suitcase. Or a suitcase that happens to be a time machine. I had the good fortune last June to have the lovely Carlotta Champagne staying at the studio for a few days. She was in traveling through Chicago to do some modeling work and …

Part 16 of 50: Color or Black & White? A Photographers Dilemma

This is part sixteen in a series of blogs on my recent artistic adventures in Mexico. I’ve been writing a lot about how I decide whether the photographs I create are going to end up being in black & white or color. Perhaps it’s time to share my opinions on that further after the last …

Part 8 of 50: The Photographers of ZoeFest

This is part eight in a series of blogs on my recent artistic adventures in Mexico. I thought I would take a moment from the BillyShow here to give some well deserved attention to my photographer colleagues at this year’s ZoeFest. As I mentioned before, Zoe Wiseman, the incredible photographer behind the Fest that bears …
