It was back in 2002 that I took my first domestic cross-country train trip. I was traveling from Chicago to San Francisco to speak at Macworld. And I decided it might be interesting to do it by train.
And it was. And a little bit amazing too. I had a small sleeper compartment for the two and a half day trip. And the most beautifully large window to look out of and watch the country pass by. A lovely part of the country. The Colorado Rockies. The Sierra Nevada Mountains. Just gorgeous.
And unlike plane travel, it was so relaxing and comfortable. I’ve never arrived at my destination in such a chill state. Yes, it was two and a half days of travel, but the journey was actually part of the destination. Seeing things I’d never seen before.
And so I made sure I photographed many of the old passenger cars in this old Santa Fe rail yard. A visual tip of the hat to a method of travel I have grown to love again.
