The sun helps. When Chicago is in the grip of temperatures that hurt your face, just seeing the sun, whether it’s actually warming you or not, definitely helps.
During that time, the Chicago River goes through various states of being completely frozen over, or sometimes looking like an icy jigsaw puzzle. It almost looks as if you could walk across it in certain places. Almost.
I made this photograph one late afternoon on one of those great days when the sun was doing it’s best to make us feel slightly warmer. Peeking through the wall of Wacker Drive buildings. I had to stop, if not to enjoy the view, then to simply feel the sun on my face for a moment.
