Photographing anything from above always has a voyeuristic quality about it to me. If you’re high enough, you can take in so many little worlds, most of which are unaware of the others. You can’t actually know all of the stories happening before you, but you can certainly imagine them.

I made this photograph recently, 28 stories over Rush Street in Chicago. It’s referred to by the locals as The Viagra Triangle, because of the high concentration of middle-aged men with their much younger women companions. And in this case you can imagine the many awkward moments happening below.

Shortly after I made this photograph, I was back on street level, walking through the circus atmosphere with some friends including my good friend Jason. We both exchanged amused looks of wonderment as we wandered through the spectacle.

“These are not my people,” I said, as we passed women in their impossibly short mini-dresses on the arms of men who could be their fathers. It wasn’t a judgement. Simply an observation.

“Isn’t this amazing?”, added Jason.

It was. I almost felt like I was walking through a zoo. I definitely felt like I didn’t belong here. Very much a wide-eyed tourist. But it was impossible to look away. It’s not that I’m a stranger to the concept of being out with beautiful women half my age. But this particular neighborhood always has the added layer of a hint of desperation. Compromise.

It is an interesting place to visit, both from above and in the thick of it.
