“I have to get back to the hotel for a meeting, but why don’t you two take my car tomorrow and you can continue exploring?”
My friend Nikki and I looked at each other in amazement. The owner of the hotel we were staying at on the Greek island of Mykonos had been giving us a guided tour of his beautiful island. After a few hours of seeing things most tourists don’t get the opportunity to see, he was out of time. But clearly he wanted us to see more.
The next day he handed over the keys to his car, and incredibly, off we went. I’m sure we seemed nice enough. I mean, we are nice. But to hand your car keys over to a couple of strangers you’ve only known for a few hours. It seemed like an incredibly trusting thing to do!
We continued exploring and found a beautiful isolated beach cove. Like nothing either of us had seen with our own eyes. No people. Perfectly surreal.
I took off my shoes and Nikki took off her Doc Martens and we both enjoyed walking along the waves lapping at the beach. It was one of those moments when you can’t believe fortune events that led you to this moment. How did we ever end up here?!
It was 20 years ago, so my memory of the name of the little hotel and the very generous owner have left the building. But everything else about that lovely day is still as clear as a bell.
This photograph sort of summed up the day. Kicking your shoes off and enjoying the paradise with the waves crashing before you.
