I feel like I’m just reached the summit of Mt. Everest. It seems like I’ve been climbing for a month. But I told myself no matter where I was at midnight tonight, that’s what I was going to upload and make live.
So the new version of billysheahan.com is finally up and running!
I’ve literally been redesigning and coding and creating new galleries for hundreds of hours over the past month. The galleries contain nearly 900 photographs, more than I’ve ever had online at once. But that still is just scratching the surface. Over the past 15 years, I’ve shot about 45,000 photos and it’s been really amazing during this process to go back and rediscover some long forgotten ones as well as decide which of the current ones are web worthy!
But there are so many more. I made sure that unlike pervious versions of the billysheahan.com, this one is easy to update, so I can add new galleries without killing a whole day. In fact, even though most of the countries I’ve visited in the last 15 years are represented, some of the galleries contain only a sample of what I consider the best images. But there just wasn’t enough time to scan and retouch and still get the new website up this decade.
In fact, the website is about two weeks late in getting up. I had planned to have it up by January 1st. Happily though, I’ve been doing so much shooting lately that the week between christmas and new years was full of making new photographs rather than organizing the old ones.
This is the 8th edition of billysheahan.com, the first one having it’s humble beginnings about 1996. But I’ve never done such a major overhaul as this. It’s going to be in two languages, English and French, but right now only the English side is done. I wanted to make sure the English side was bug free before I started the translation.
So right now, it’s uploading from my computer to my server on the west coast. Then it’s just a matter of switching the first page to point to the new site instead of the old one and… voila. It will be live.
One glaringly out of date page is the monthly postcard page. Since the last postcard I sent out was way back in July… well, that’s what the website has on it as well. I’ve begun the process of having the postcards done for me instead of me doing all the printing myself, which should really save me an incredible amount of time. As a result, there will be a January postcard out… I’m pretty sure before the end of January.
But the big new is that after five years, I’m having my first photography exhibition at a lovely place called Echo Gallery in Chicago. The opening is Saturday evening February 11th from 8pm to midnight. I’ll have more details about it very soon. They usually have two opening nights, so if you can’t make the first one, they usually have another a week later.
So have a look, let me know what you think… good and bad… or if something just isn’t working. I would call it truly only about 90% done. The photos are there, but I usually like to write a little text along with many of the photos and that isn’t done yet. So while it looks finished, there are still a few more things I’d like to add. I’ve had the chance to work with a lot of new people in the past few years and not all of them are represented. That will be remedied soon as well!
Thanks for all of you who have supported me over the years both in front of and behind the camera. Without your encouragement, it would be so much more difficult to create all of this!
